Canadian mezzo-soprano Kady Evanyshyn, praised for her “beautiful, powerful voice and wonderful expressiveness” (Opernglas), is quickly establishing herself on major opera stages worldwide. Following her recent debut as Charlotte at the Bregenzer Festspiele, critics lauded her “luminous mezzo-soprano” and “psychologically well-balanced acting” (ORF Kultur), and described her as an artist who “brings a captivating presence to the stage, weaving her clear, bright voice into the action” (Vorarlberger News).
The 2024-2025 season will mark Kady’s house and role debut at Opernhaus Zürich as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro under the baton of Antonello Manacorda. She will also continue her work as an ensemble member at Staatsoper Hamburg, where she will debut as Meg Page in Falstaff, conducted by Finnegan Downie Dear, and in a new production as Ismene in Mozart’s Mitridate, Re di Ponto, directed by Birgit Kajtna-Wönig and conducted by Adam Fischer. Other upcoming roles at Staatsoper Hamburg include a house debut as Annio in La clemenza di Tito and revivals as Mercédès in Carmen and Javotte in Manon.
Kady’s recent debut roles include Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther at the 2023 Bregenzer Festspiele and Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel at the 2022 Verbier Festival. Since joining the ensemble of Staatsoper Hamburg in 2022, Kady has appeared in various roles including Fjodor in a new production of Boris Godunov by Frank Castorf, Siébel in Faust, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Tisbe in La Cenerentola, Flora in La Traviata, 2. Dame in Die Zauberflöte, and Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor, among many others. She also premiered the role of Amore in the world premiere of Salvatore Sciarrino’s Venere e Adone, conducted by Kent Nagano. As part of the International Opera Studio at Staatsoper Hamburg, she performed roles such as Glascha in Kát’a Kabanová, Zaide in Il Turco in Italia, Laura in Luisa Miller, Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and Agnes in Unseres kleines Scheisskaff – Fucking Åmål, a role for which she was critically acclaimed.
During her studies, Kady performed as Celia in Haydn’s La fedeltà premiata, Mrs. Grose in The Turn of the Screw, Frau Reich in Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor, La Tasse Chinoise in L’enfant et les sortilèges with Emmanuel Villaume in Alice Tully Hall, and Second Woman in Dido and Aeneas at The Juilliard School, London’s Opera Holland Park and Opéra Royal de Versailles.
On the concert stage, she has performed works by Monteverdi with the Juilliard 415 ensemble and William Christie, Haydn’s Theresienmesse conducted by Jonathan Brandani, Bach’s Ich habe genug, BWV 82, with Simone Dinnerstein, and Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noel and Bartok’s Drei Dorfszenen with Kent Nagano.
Contemporary music has been a cornerstone of Kady’s career. She was the first singer to perform at the Goddard Space Flight Center, premiering Bruce Adolphe's I Saw How Fragile and Infinitely Precious the World Is for mezzo-soprano, cello, and pre-recorded electronics. She also sang the world premiere of Stefano Gervasoni’s Drei Grabschriften at Focus Festival and performed the role of Claire in the West Coast premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain at Music Academy of the West. Other recent highlights include Berio’s Folk Songs with AXIOM in Alice Tully Hall, conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky, Druckman’s Animus II for Juilliard ChamberFest, and Edgar David Grana’s Tashi Tibet at the National Opera Center. In previous seasons Kady has worked with ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet and the ÆON Music Ensemble.
A passionate recitalist, Kady was invited to participate in the 2020 Weill Institute Song Studio with Renée Fleming at Carnegie Hall, culminating in a recital and her Carnegie Hall debut. She was an encouragement prizewinner at the 2017 Gerda Lissner Lieder/Song Competition and a semifinalist in the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition. In 2023, she was the winner of the New Orleans District and received 2nd prize in the Gulf Coast Region of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.
Kady earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Edith Wiens. While at Juilliard, she was awarded both the John Erskine Prize for exceptional scholastic and artistic achievement and the Novick Career Advancement Grant. She is a proud alumnus of the Aspen Music Festival (New Horizons Fellow), Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artists Vocal Academy, Music Academy of the West and Classic Lyric Arts. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she has received support from the Manitoba Arts Council and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation.
